Chapter

Twenty-Four

The lamps flickered in the draft when Harvey walked in, but all eyes were on the room’s center where Dan and Carl struggled on the floor. Men stood on chairs to get a better view; cash passed from hand to hand. Mac danced back and forth with the rolling men like an unrecognized referee, spittle flying from his mouth.

Harvey spotted Mal on the far side of the room, hair in a sweat-soaked rat’s nest, her clothes torn. A rangy, blond kid with short dreadlocks and an ugly, homemade tattoo of a flaming skull on his arm was putting his hand on Mal’s shoulder and talking into her ear. He had a bruise the size of a saucer on his right cheek and the marks of frostbite on his ears. And he had the berserker glint in his eye, the little extra dose of crazy she knew too well. Mal ignored him, her eyes focused on the fight.

There was no way she was getting Mal out of here unnoticed. Might as well make a statement. Harvey grabbed a full pitcher of beer of a nearby table and elbowed her way through the crowd until she was in the circle.

“Knock it off!” She flung the beer straight into both fighters’ faces. The crowd froze. Carl reeled, and pushed back from Dan, pawing at his eyes. Dan choked and lost his grip.

“Idiots. What is wrong with you?” Harvey stepped over the two men and grabbed Mal by the wrist, pulling her away from the boy. “Get your hands off my daughter, blondie.” She unleashed just enough of the berserk into her voice that the growl vibrated her breastbone.

The kid’s eyes went wide and he stepped back.

“Come on.” She turned her back on him and dragged Mal along, past Dan and Carl.

“No.” Mal jerked away. Her wrist slipped in Harvey’s grip, the tug strong enough to pull Harvey up short. “I’m not done here. Dan can give me a ride home.”

“I wouldn’t let him walk you across the street.”

Laughs and jeers from the men. Arn had gotten out his baseball bat. Shit. So much for making it out the door while they were all still wondering what was going on. Harvey shifted her grip on Mal’s arm and gave the circle of men a warning glare. “Come on. We’re leaving.”

“Harvey, stop.” Carl struggled to his feet, hands out, imploring. Dan rose up behind him, popping his jaw and shaking out his hands.

“Get out of my way,” she hissed. “You’re supposed to be helping me.”

Mac sidled into view, out of arm’s reach. “Yeah Carl, you’re supposed to be helping. Do whatever the queen wants, Carl. Get down on your knees, Carl.”

The red in Carl’s face deepened, but he didn’t turn toward Mac. “It’s too late, Harvey. She knows what she is. She needs to know what that means.”

“She is my daughter, not yours,” Harvey snapped. “I decide who tells her what and when.”

“Then teach her yourself, goddammit!” Carl yelled in her face. “Before some jackoff like Mac does it for you.
